2022 Election GOALSENGAGE CITIZENS WITH RESPECT AND VALUE THEIR INPUT
Public hearings may not be the ideal place to receive input, as there is often considerable work and expense that has gone into forming a recommendation. I’m advocating for more ‘Town Hall Style Meetings’ to engage citizens on a project before the recommendations are made to provide a framework for developers to understand what the community requires to support their project and keep costs as low as possible. This would help focus developer and staff efforts toward an ultimate goal of encouraging ‘the right kind of development in the right place’ with informed support. Respect Existing Homes. For many years Council has heard from affected neighbours about the loss of view corridors, forested areas or the loss of privacy when new developments plan to tower over neighbours. I support treating your neighbours the way you would want to be treated - with consideration for the impact and by planning to follow the OCP unless citizens say it should change. Plan for the Future. Sewers are limited due to size of the CRD Allocation for Colwood in the sewage treatment plant, yet development numbers have been tripled without consideration for how we will provide this service. Roads are limited and in many places require land acquisition in order to meet the traffic numbers generated by development. Transit goals can not be met without significant upgrades to roads. Climate change requires that we preserve our tree canopy, streams and wetlands. We are working to finalize our Parks Master Plan, but we know that our plans include many more residents in the future and we have not yet prioritized a way to increase our parks. We will need to address not just what we have today, but also what we will need in the future to ensure more parks are created to support our growing community including all ages and all abilities. Youth and Family counselling through Pacific Centre Family Services located in Colwood supports families to access services locally, but services in Colwood are still stretched thin to meet the needs of our youth and families. I will advocate for increased services from the Provincial Government in working to address the dual crisis of illicit drugs and pandemic impacts including youth anxiety. Community Events help us to get to know each other, strengthen relationships and promote inclusion. Arts, Culture, Music, stories for the future and of the past bring us together supporting and enhancing our Community connections..
