Cynthia has lived in Colwood with her husband for 35 years.
She is passionate about people, nature and the arts.
Equality of opportunity and promotion of democracy are key drivers for her committment to building a connected and caring community.
"My greatest contribution is championing community engagement".
Our Official Community Plan put real emphasis on both informing and involving average citizens. Cynthia heard from many citizens that they feel their input has been ‘discounted’ from 2018 to 2022 and that they want more inclusive governance that upholds the Official Community Plan Vision.
As Past Chair of the Victoria Family Court and Youth Justice Committee for more than 10 years, Cynthia advocates for youth and families. "Family strength is community strength which builds our capacity for success."
"Councillor Cynthia Day cares about her community and speaks up on behalf of residents such as youth, families, adults with disabilities, and seniors to ensure that their voices are heard at a municipal and provincial level with sensitivity to their needs and issues.
Her commitment and exemplary attendance at committee meetings shows that the City of Colwood is lucky to have her as a hard worker and as a leader." - Marnie Essery, Chair, Intermunicipal Advisory Committee on Disability Issues.
First elected to Council in 2002, Cynthia has championed community activities. First reviving community events by rolling up her sleeves and hosting park events, it grew into annual stewardship events with the help of volunteer organizations like the Friends of Havenwood Park and the Green Team. Events like 'Eats and Beats' at Esquimalt Lagoon have grown from the success of her work to create more opportunities for the community to come together.
As the vice-chair of the Intermunicipal Advisory Committee on Disability Issues, Cynthia knows that we are all just one accident away from needing accessible housing, shopping and recreation. “I try to remind Council at every opportunity to embrace Accessible improvements and make it a requirement of all new infrastructure.” IACDI developed a tool for increasing access while decreasing liability and shares this tool with other communities to increase access throughout BC, Canada and the world. The User Friendly Trail Guide highlights local access and is available online through West Shore Parks and Recreation.
